iPod Crime Wave?

A new report by The Urban Institute suggests that the success of the ipod has led to an increase in violent crime in the US.

Robberies began to dramatically increase in 2005, around the time iPods became commonplace. The ipod couldnt be closed down after theft, was easily sold, easily identified and the users were typically not 100% aware of their surroundings. There are several potential holes in the theory one being the fact that the biggest increases in violent crime were in small and medium-sized cities, which would seem to provide less snatch-and-grab opportunities than crowded urban environments.

SF Gate have a good post on the report.
